How the Valentine's Day has changed over time? Until the 14th century Valentine's day was about honoring Christian martyrs. Then a poet Geoffrey Chaucer connected the holiday to romance during the Middle Ages. His poem in 1382, "The Parliament of Fowls" link the holiday to love.William Shakespeare is also credited for some of his poems influencing the popularity of the holiday. The first Valentine's was possibly based on a German tradition. Now about 145 million valentines are sold every year.
Celebrations Then Roman traditions were the festival of Lupercalia. The Christian connection replaced Lupercalia with a Christian feast day to honor Saint Valentine.
Celebrations Now Valentine's Day is celebrated now by exchanging gifts with loved ones. Common gifts are cards, flowers, and chocolates.
